Life Science

Students certifying in Life Science teach only biology at the middle grades level. All students certifying in middle grades level must take the required course work to be recommended for certification at that level. Click here for a complete list of courses in the Professional Development sequence. Students who want to teach science at the senior grades level should complete the Composite Science certification.

Biology: 24 hours

  • introductory biology sequence (usually 6 hours)
  • lower-division biology lab (usually 2 hours)
  • genetics (usually BIO 325)
  • ecology (usually BIO 373)

 At least 10 additional upper-division hours demonstrating a breadth of knowledge in the following areas:

  • evolution
  • plant biology
  • cellular and molecular biology
  • microbiology
  • physiology
  • animal

Two upper-division lab courses. May include courses from those listed above.

Chemistry: at least 8 hours of introductory chemistry including lab

Math: at least 3 semester hours at above the pre-calculus level
